In conflict zones, cultural heritage, including museums, archives, monuments, and digitised collections, are under threat from physical destruction and cyberattacks. Saving Ukrainian Culture and Heritage Online (SUCHO), aims to safeguard Ukrainian cultural heritage by identifying and archiving at-risk sites and digital content.

To support SUCHO's mission, this project aimed to boost awareness, increase volunteer participation, and enhance fundraising through a comprehensive website redesign. My approach involved creating an engaging and user-friendly interface with intuitive navigation tailored to suit various user groups, from programmers to the general public. This design efficiently directed users to crucial areas like volunteer sign-up and donation pages.

My “Saving Pixels” design concept featured pixel art and screen glitches inspired by Ukrainian folk art to visually convey the idea of digital loss. A vibrant colour scheme was used, along with Keratine, a typeface by Zetafonts, for headers. Its italic version (mimicking screen glitches) was incorporated in the background imagery to enhance the site's overall aesthetic (e.g. on the Volunteer page).

In consideration of inclusivity, a simplified version of the site was developed, removing the glitch-inspired backgrounds for improved accessibility.

However, as with most service design projects, continuous testing and evaluation would be essential to fully gauge the success of this website redesign.
