Manifesto of Creative Confabulation

Editorial Design, Creative Writing

“The designer is the artist of today, not because he is a genius but because he works in such a way as to re-establish contact between art and the public”— Bruno Munari (Design as Art)

Taking Bruno Mari’s statement as inspiration, this manifesto playfully challenges designers to approach their work as artists

Client: MA Graphic Design, Falmouth University
Project: Editorial design to support a piece of creative writing

Services: Graphic Design, Editorial Design, Print Design, Creative Writing

This piece of creative writing takes its cues from the unique tone, emphasis and cadence of the manifesto—for instance, the genre’s liberal use of bold, emphatic declarations, aggrandisement even idealistic fanaticism. This written work is a playful antithesis to the strict principles, rules and minutiae proposed by other design and typographic movements.

The editorial design would be printed using three spot colours: vibrant red (a colour traditionally associated with revolutionary literature), metallic gold, and deep blue. The printed booklet would be bound as loose leaves using a covered, coloured elastic. The elastic can be removed and the cover pages unfolded – creating a poster. The poster would be visible once the paper’s unfolded (on the hidden, inner side).
